Obituary of Samuel Edgar Watson
Edgar Watson, from the class of 1958 I believe, has passed away. He is the son of Dr. Samuel Edgar Watson, a Watson Clinic pioneer. Since Watson is such a prominent name in Lakeland, I think this passing is worthy of mention in our class blog. Samuel Edgar Watson Obituary

50th Reunion Reservations & Remittance Received Log
The following links, one in Excel format and the other in portable document format (PDF), lead to a document that shows the classmates for whom we have received reunion reservations. The format has changed There are now three columns, one for Friday evening only, another for Friday and Saturday or Saturday only, and the final one is for book orders only. If your reservation appears in the Saturday column, your reunion book fee is included in Saturday evening's fee. Use this tool to double check us; however, remember that Jan Lyons has the only official record. If this blog is incorrect, I may have misinterpreted the information that Jan gave me.

Arlene Sheridan Jones Update - Reunion - Health Issues
Dear friends:
As you probably know, reunions are fun to me and I treasure them. I could not wait for our 50th and wouldn't miss it for anything. Then "this year" happened. My Dave had a small heart attack in Feb. but that was the beginning only.......they put him on a a med that we all thought caused her hemoglobin to fall........as a few weeks later he was rushed to the hospital and admitted with a hgb of 7 (normal is 12-16 for a man).
Even now it is only 10. He had 4 transfusions and tons of tests. They thought it was the medication so sent him home with nothing more but Iron to add to his list of meds. Then he began failing again and collapsed at home.........called 911 and same song and dance. This time they did a colonoscopy (they didn't' do one before because he had one recently and was to weak to go thru it). They found polyps and a leaking spot which they fixed. 4 more blood transfusions later he came home. In between all of this they made him aware of a 1-2 cm. spot on his lung that was found. He had Pet scan and then biopsy. Was cancer. He was unable to have surgery so they did radiation. He has COPD and is on oxygen. He is home and doing much better. We could not imagine going to FL for the reunion. We let Allan know.
Things are still up in the air about it. Neither of us are well at all. I think he could handle the reunion by then but the trip to Lakeland (we live in upstate SC near the NC border........closer to Brevard) would be quite a taxing event for him. We did it 18 months ago and it was hard on both of us then as my back doesn't do well to travel.
So I wanted to tell you all that the Reunion I so looked forward to, has become less and less important to me as priorities have changed tremendously. Our plans are to sell this retirement home we built 10 years ago and go back to Lakeland to be near our 2 children and 7 grandchildren. God knows our future.......

Butler Hendrix now lives in Haskell, OK, with his spouse Jean. Butler was originally in the LHS class of 1958. However, he was injured in the 1957 collapse of the skating rink roof, and he dropped back to the class of 1959. He did not finish with us, and I don't remember why. The Highlanders from 57 through 59 show no photos of Butler; however, the 58 Highlander has his name, with no page reference, in the index. Butler told me that he was in the hot-rod club with Dennis Fontaine, who became a multi-millionaire from his holdings in Discount Auto Parts, and then he died six months later of cancer.
Butler mentioned a brother, Jimmy Hendrix, who before graduation, joined the Air Force with a friend under the Buddy Program. I sort of remember the name, Jimmy Hendrix, but I have no face to go with the name.

Larry Hale Reports
Keeping busy with tennis. Working 2 days a week at the tennis courts, in the office. Working tennis tournaments all summer long, in the office, and as an umpire, when needed. 3 trips to Florida so far this year. 50th High School class (1959) reunion in Lakeland, FL in late Oct this year. Riding my Harley often as possible, officer (SGT AT ARMS) in our ALR (American Legion Rider) group, officer (VICE COMMANDER) in our American Legion Post 304 in Kennesaw. Have participated recently in PATRIOT GUARD ESCORT CEREMONIES, FOR OUR FALLEN SOLDIERS. Monthly meetings and several bike charity rides, mixing business and fun. Just trying to be giving something back to our veteran's families and their communities...
Just keeping busy, seems like busier now, than when I was working full time. The BIG difference is that, I keep busy doing what I want to do, not what the employer wants me to do. HAHAHA.
Also attending the Allstate Retirement quarterly group luncheons at selected locations around the county. Have seen Brenda Prince, Sandy Dyer, Gerald, Joyce Owens, Ginny Marchant, and a few others. Great group

Consider Zohra's or The Antiquarian Restaurants During the Reunion
We, by chance, found Zohra's Restaurant on Lake Wire Drive. across from the old Lakeland Junior High School, now Lawton Chiles Academy. It offers a Meditteranean cuisine and an unhurried atmosphere. I am making this information available because I am thinking that some of you might like to use it for a Saturday lunch, for example.
Jane McGauley Eskenazi recommends the Antiquarian restaurant. Says Jane, "I also love The Antiquarian on Bay Street, which isn't very far from the old Junior High."

Ferrin HIcks Hospitalized
Ferrin Hicks has reported that he is in Room B350B, Lakeland Regional Medical Center, with a heart attack and partial renal failure. He has been in for about three days. He has his cell phone with him, and the number is (863) 812-5783. He does not know how long he will be hospitalized, so he most likely will appreciate calls from classmates and friends.
We all wish Ferrin the best of luck in his recovery.

Travis Tate's Work On The Saturn Complex 37 Project
Around the year 1962, Travis worked for Frank M. Murphy and Associates, which was located about 2 miles north of Ft. Meade, Florida on US-17. This company was a subcontractor on the Saturn Complex 37 Project.
The structure seen in the photograph is the top section of the launch tower. It was built in four sections, each weighing 70 tons. Upon completion, this monster had to be transported by truck to Cape Canaveral, Florida. Travis reports that the truck driver had experienced 16 flat tires by the time he reached Bartow, which is nine miles to the north.
The colored photograph shows the Saturn Complex 37 as currently depicted on Flikr.com. I added the banner.
The last photo is a cropped close-up of Travis.

Arlene Sheridan Jones Reports On The Health Of Her Husband, Dave
Arelene Sheridan Jones wishes to share with the class that her husband, David (Dave) Jones, is newly diagnosed with right upper lope lung Cancer. He also suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Because of the COPD, he is not a candidate for surgery. He will be treated with radiation. The cancer is very early stage, and the prognosis is good. Most certainly, Dave will beat his cancer, and we will see Arlene and him at our reunion.
Dave is a member of the LHS Class of 1957, although a technical error put him in the 1958 Highlander.
Arlene also reports that when Dave is again well, they will sell their home in Cleveland, SC, and they will move back home (Lakeland) to be near kids, family, and friends. Do you know any one who wants to buy in Cleveland, SC?

50th Reunion Snail-Mail Letter and Questionnaire
This blog article contains a link to the reunion letter and questionnaire snail-mailed on May 12, 2009. You invited to print the questionnaire from the blog article and submit it. This may come in handy, especially if you misplace the letter and questionnaire.
Link To Reunion Letter & Questionnaire
Each of you can help minimize the workload on Roger Sherman by emailing to him the answers to the questions on the lower half of the questionnaire. It will much easier for him to cut and paste your text than to type your handwritten responses. Windows users may use Notepad, which is a part of the Windows Operating System, to prepare their answers in a text format. I am not a MAC user, but I believe TextEdit is used with a MAC, just as Notepad is used with Windows. When finished, attach the text document to an email and fire it off to Roger at castlemore@aol.com. I am sure that Roger would love it, if you email your answers in today or even yesterday. He has a great deal of work to do. NOTE: You will still need to snail-mail the upper half of the questionnaire back to us with your reservations and money.
Roger asks that, in an effort to identify and fight SPAM, you put LHS in the subject of any email that you send to him. By doing so, you will make it easy for him to determine that you are not a sinister force.
The letter does not contain information about a Sunday brunch at Cleveland Heights Golf and Country Club because we are trying to keep Sunday informal and off of the agenda. However, for planning purposes, we'd like to know how many of you would plan to attend this brunch. Please email me, Allan Davis, at adavis@verizon.net or Beatty Raymond at ebraymond810@verizon.net with your intentions.
The letter does contain one error. It indicates that October 24 is a Friday. Actually, October 23 is a Friday.

Jane Morris Bay - Update On Career As Author
Dear Friends,
I'm happy to announce that both my books, PRECIOUS JEWELS OF TIBET and LOVE & LOSS can now be purchased directly from my website, and within the very near future, LOVE & LOSS will be available on Kindle. That's right, the little computer book. I know you thought I'd never make it into the 21st century, but guess what, I'm a new woman and am embracing the new technology…..
Just wanted you to know and hope you will spread the word to introduce my website www.JaneBay.com to more people.
There's a new short story in the "Stories from the Road" section on the website that includes a photo from the Leesburg High School 50th Class Reunion that I attended in March with my childhood friends. The trip to North Carolina and Florida was an amazing journey, and I got all the information I need to go forward with the next chapter of GROWING UP SOUTHERN. I'm going into writing retreat for the Summer and will send the it to you in the near future.
Love to all,
Jane

Harrison Payne Hospitalized - A Note From Marge Payne
Just a note to let all know that Harrison was admitted to the hospital this past Sunday. His heart rate was way out of control. Yesterday he was in surgery for about five hours. At first they did a cath and said he only has one artery that is working in his heart and that is about 20 percent blocked but not enough to put a stint in it. Then they went and did more ablation surgery, The doctor said that hopefully he was able to do enough to stop the fast heart rate but only time will tell. Harrison is in the CCU right now - not sure when they will move him out - if he does well probably in the next few days. Please keep him in your prayers.

Jane Morris Bay Shares Notes About Her North Carolina Trip
Kitty and I are going back to North Carolina on Saturday, March 7 for one more visit with our cousins to wrap up the research for the next chapter of GROWING UP SOUTHERN - Stories from the Attic of Childhood Memories. This chapter/short story will be about our Mother. Below are some notes I made last April during the Morris Girls Road Trip that I wanted to share you on the eve of our upcoming journey to the South. These notes will be part of the next chapter, with a new twist.
"The dogwood and azaleas were in full bloom when we arrived in North Carolina. It's rained like cats and dogs every day, but we've spent most of our time sitting around the dinner table, eating good homegrown food and talking with cousins about our family history. Went over to Kenly yesterday to the house that Uncle Elton and Aunt Gladys lived in where Mother lost her high school ring a few days after graduating in 1932. Mother was throwing out food scraps onto the compost pile and her ring, a little too big, flew off her finger and disappeared into the compost.
Mother had been very upset about the loss of her 14 carat gold ring studded with a multifaceted oval shaped ruby. I remember her telling this story when we were children every time we went to visit Uncle Elton and Aunt Gladys who kept a vegetable garden year round until after Aunt Gladys died.
Fifty years later when the current owner of the house was rototilling the garden, he noticed a red stone (ruby) sparkling in the soil that had been turned over and, low and behold, it was Mother's ring. His wife found the initials IBN (Ina Blanche Neighbor) inscribed inside on the band of the ring. She called Benson High School in an effort to locate the owner, and the local newspaper wrote up a story about the long lost ring. Someone sent the article to Mother in Florida, and shortly thereafter, she went to her 50th High School Class Reunion and was reunited with her ring. I'm wearing the ring on a gold chain around my neck while we're here in North Carolina in memory of our dear sweet mother."
Mother was indescribably happy to have her High School Graduation ring, and enjoyed telling the story of it's recovery for over twenty year.
As you may remember, there was magic in the air during last years trip to North Carolina, Georgia and Florida, and the two recent short stories I sent you, which have been revised, rewritten and embellished, are now up on the website www.JaneBay.com with wonderful photographs in the "Stories from the Road" section. "SynchroDestiny" is the story about my being reunited with Martha Jean Webster (Miller), my best childhood friend from the age of three until I left Leesburg when I was twelve years old.
As its turned out, I've been invited by my childhood friends from Kindergarten through the Fifth Grade to come as an honorary member to their 50th Leesburg High School Class Reunion on Friday and Saturday, March 13-14. I am so excited I can hardly stand it. Several of my friends from Lakeland, where I actually graduated from high school, are also having a luncheon in my honor while I'm in Florida. One of my best high school girlfriends, who was the Captain of our cheerleading squad, is actually coming in from Texas for the get together because she won't be able to attend the 50th Lakeland High School Class Reunion in October. Of course, I'll be there for that one, too.
There's something karmicly delicious about this journey, with Mother's ring and her 50th high school class reunion, and both my 50th high school class reunions, so off I go with her ring on a gold chain around my neck and an open heart full of love and gratitude for all life's blessing, big and small. Life is good even in these hard and troubling times we're going through right now.
Oh, and, one more thing, yesterday I got a copy of my portrait for the 2008 Lucasfilm Yearbook which is attached.
Love ya'll. Bye bye.... Jane

Paul Schiff Shares His Conneticut Winter Wonderland
Allan... I don't know if you saw our snowstorms on television.
Attached are some photos I took at our house. Temperatures are in the 20s... but it is a winter wonderland. The driveway (400 feet) gets plowed by me sitting atop an elderly Bolens tractor. People have fun in different ways, I guess.
Feel free to share these with others.

Attached are some photos I took at our house. Temperatures are in the 20s... but it is a winter wonderland. The driveway (400 feet) gets plowed by me sitting atop an elderly Bolens tractor. People have fun in different ways, I guess.
Feel free to share these with others.

James Elbon Flies High
James has flown high at least twice in his life. The photo above and to the left, taken in 1983, is his Evel Knievil impersonation. The following is a link that James furnished.
TT Data Base
James also flew high in his career as a flight engineer with Saudi Arabia Airlines (see photo upper right). During his tenure with the airline, he attended a LHS Class of 1959 reunion, and got the award for traveling the greatest distance.
In James's most recent career, he is keeping his feet firmly on the ground. He freelances in low/no budget movies as a stereographer, videographer, and behind the scenes photographer. He likes being the art director's assistant the best. For more information, please follow the link below.

Roger Sherman Now Commander In Imperial Order Of The Dragon Of Annam
I have been awarded the Imperial Order of the Dragon of Annam, rank of commander, by the Imperial House of Viet Nam. This is the imperial family suppressed by the French, and driven out by the communists. This Order was considered so important that the French Government continued its award during their dominance, after which time it was again vested in the Imperial Family. I have also been made an Imperial Baron. Of course this is all grand, especially if one lives in SE Asia, or perhaps Orange County CA, but not so much here in central Florida. Anyway I seem to be in good company and the medal is neat. Details this Saturday!! All of this and $5.00 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Jane Morris Bay - Careers & Experiences
Our own Jane Morris Bay has led a very interesting life - sad in ways, but seemingly fulfilling with two wonderful careers. The first is with George Lucas, an American film director, producer, and screenwriter, the creator of the epic space opera saga Star Wars and the archaeologist-adventurer character Indiana Jones. Her second career is as an author. Her first book, PRECIOUS JEWELS OF TIBET – A Journey to the Roof of the World, was written on weekends during the three years between her first and second visits to Tibet. Her second book, LOVE & LOSS – A Story About Life, Death, and Rebirth, was born out of grief for the loss of her beloved adopted Tibetan daughter, Namgyal Youdon. She is currently working on two other books, a memoir entitled Growing Up Southern, and an anthology of short stories called The Magic of New Mexico about her experiences on the Navajo and Hopi reservations, and the Pueblos along the Rio Grande River.
Jane has a web site that has many interesting links about her careers and experiences. Please visit this web site at the link shown below.

Update On Leon Futch
An update from Rosemary Futch
Came home to get clothes and back to Tampa. Leon came through the four hour operation okay but he had a nerve block on his leg and still is numb which is a side effect. Can't walk on the new knee replacement because his knee buckles because it is still numb. They won't release him from the hospital until he can walk with a walker on the new implant-catch twenty two situation. He is aggravated and bored laying around , so if anyone wants to call and talk to him his direct line in his room is: 813-8441756.

James Waibel Had The Coolest Chopped And Channeled Hot Rods At LHS
You remember Jimmy Waibel? He was the one who had the coolest chopped and channeled hot rods at school. He blueprinted Chrysler engines, and became so good at it that after he graduated, he built racing engines for Chrysler corporation. He also built world record dragster engines, and held some world records himself. I remember he also built the engines for the Smothers Brothers racing team.
Cheers,

LHS Class of 1959 Thanksgiving/Christmas Party, 2008, at Mary Futch's Home
December 13, 2008, has been chosen for a get-together (soiree', meeting, etc.) at Mary Futch's. The time is 5:00 PM or thereabouts. The format is as usual. Bring a covered dish, and if you desire an adult beverage, bring that also. You may come early, if you wish to help with the setup.
There is a change this time, however. So that Mary is not left with tons of food to package, store and eventually dispose of, we ask that you take home with you any part of your covered dish delight that is not eaten by the end of the night.
Be prepared to participate in preliminary discussions concerning our 50th class reunion, which is tentatively scheduled for October 23 and 24, 2009.

Marge Payne Shares Harrison's Progress With Us
A Note From Marge Payne
Sent August 13, 2008
Hi all, Well, it has been nearly three weeks now that Harrison has been home from the Nursing Home. I am pleased to say that he is making progress and getting around some. He has therapy three times a week - and they are pleased with his progress. This past week our home health care put him on a monitor what they call "Tell a Health". This is a machine that takes all his vital signs once a day and transmits them to a nurse who in return sends a report to home health care. If there seems to be any problems , they call us right away and also calls our doctor. Our doctor gets a read out once a week. With this machine they are hoping to stop the readmissions into the hospital so often. Our home health care only has ten of these machine and we are fortunate that Harrison is a candidate for one of them. He is still on oxygen and it looks like he will be for a while. We continually pray that he will get well enough to get out and about once again.. We thank all for the prayers and concerns that have come our way.LOL - Marge

Update on Harrison Payne from Marge Payne
Just an update on Harrison's progress. I am very pleased to say that Harrison walked a ways down the hall yesterday and did not have any bad breathing spells afterward. The two therapists that are working with him are just wonderful and understand the heart and lung problems. Praise the Lord for our progress. He still has the oxygen on most of the time and and is now taking breathing treatments. With this progress I see him coming home in a while. Thanks again for all the prayers that have come our way. Harrison Payne Rehabilitating At Wedgewood Nurnsing Home
Classmates sent their best wishes to Harrison and Marge.
The following is a note from Harrison's wife, Marge.
Sent: Fri, 4 Jul 2008 6:47 am
Just a note to let everyone know that they moved Harrison to Wedgewood Nursing home yesterday. They did not find a blood clot in his lungs (which is good news) - there are some kidney problems and he is still having trouble breathing when he gets up and moves a little. I do not see much difference now than before he was admitted to the hospital. His back pain is very bad because he is not able to move around much (there is not much they can do about this as he has had it for a long time.) I pray that he will soon be back home here with me and Molly. Thanks for all the prayers that have been send his way.Marge

George Kistner Critically Ill -- A Personal Note From Sherri Kistner, George's Wife
This is an update to everyone. The nurse has been here today and told me that it is not going to be too much longer for George. It seems that he is on the last leg of his journey here on this earth. He responds very little when spoken to and eats nothing. It will probably be this week or at the most next week. He is still using his oxygen some, but does not even know if it is on most of the time. We are using liquid pain medicine to relieve his pain (which he does not even complain about anymore). For all of you who has spoken kind thoughts and prayers, I thank you from the bottom of my heart which is breaking now for him. I know that it is better for him to let him go. My wish is that you pray that I may be strong enough to do so when the time is upon us.
love and thankfulness to all of you,
Sherri

Pre-Spring Social at Mary Futch's Lakeside Home
The LHS Class of 1959 held its pre-Spring soiree on the evening of March 8, 2008. The setting was the beautiful lakeside home of Mary Futch. Many thanks, Mary. In the photographs below, I have attempted to show everyone that attended. However, I forgot to have anyone take my(Allan Davis's) photo.
The center photo above shows beautiful Lake Lester, a private lake upon which Mary Futch lives. Those of you who have never been to Mary's home have missed a really beautiful experience.
The photo at the upper left features, from the left, Bobby Davidson, Barry Sears, and Ferrin Hicks. In the background, you can see Annette Davis (green sweater) and way off to the far right is Charlie Page.
The photo in the upper right features, in the foreground, Barry Sears and his friend, Stacy Bean. In the background are Roger Sherman and Charlie Page.
The photo in the lower left shows Charlie Page lecturing, or so it appears, to Roger Sherman.
The photo in the lower right shows Charlotte Goodman Key and her husband, O. B. Key.
The center photo is another view of beautiful Lake Lester from Mary's backyard.
The photo on the upper left features Annette Davis.
The photo on the upper right features Charlie and Nancy Page in the foreground. In the background are Barry Sears's friend, Stacy Bean, and Ferrin Hicks.
The photo in the lower left is of Jack Walker. Jack and his wife, Liz, were in town with their recreational vehicle, and Jack decided to come to the party.
Ferrin Hicks and his friend, Lilly, grace the photo in the lower right.
The photo in the upper left proves the presence of James Edwards.

Rodney James Answers Larry Hale's Tennis Challenge
[Quote from Rodney James]
"I talked to Lax Taylor yesterday, March 1st concerning the proposal put forth by Larry Hale involving a tennis match between the old geezers from the 59 era. Lex remembered the singles match played for the county championship between himself and our own Larry Hale back in 1959. Lex was a graduate of Bartow High School and though he admits Larry got the win in that event, he said that Larry was lucky. He would like to face him again. Lex went on to the University of Florida and is now a practicing attorney here in Lakeland. He is a friend of our own Jimmy Musso. I first met Lex during one of my visits to Fat Jacks to enjoy their cheap two egg special for breakfast. Lex, Jimmy and I have that in common we love cheap value breakfast deals and Fat Jacks fills the bill. l think it would be fun to play a tennis match against Larry and Dave Beerman. Hope it works out."

Larry Hale Throws Down Tennis Gauntlet
Larry Hale has thrown down the tennis gauntlet. He is going to beseech upon Dave Beerman, Beerman Family Tennis Center, to join him in a men's doubles match, challenging Rodney James and his current men's doubles partner, Lex Taylor, in a doubles tennis dual. Losers buy beer, I guess. Larry proposes the week of April 8 through April 11 for this showdown of tennis titans.
Larry has provided a little history, saying that, in the 1959 Polk County High School Singles Championship, he defeated Lex Taylor. We have no reason to doubt his story. As of this writing, I know very little about Lex Taylor, such as where he went to school? Is he a 1959 graduate?
We will use the website blog to keep everyone updated.

Rodney James Wins Gold In Senior Olympics
Rodney James has again this year participated in the Senior Olympic Games, winning two gold medals in tennis. His partner for mixed doubles was Wanda Crocker, and his partner for men's doubles was Lex Taylor. Congratulations to Rodney and his partners.
In past years he has had similar success in the Senior Olympics, winning medals in tennis, the javelin and shot putt. In past years, his mixed doubles partner was Josie Womble, wife of our very own George Womble. They won one gold medal and two silvers by combining their talents.
Photographs may be available later, if the Senior Olympics officials are willing to share.

More On The Fire That Destroyed Hugh Turbeville's Art Collection And Army/Navy Business
The Ledger has published yet another article about Hugh Turbeville's art collection, which was lost to fire. Not only did this fire destroy Hugh's 38 years of collecting valuable art, it also devastated wildlife artist, Robert Butler, because the loss represents 25% of his life's work. James Elbon's Movie Career
A number of classmates have asked about James Elbon's role in movie making. So, I asked him. He has held several job titles such as assistant producer, art assistant, videograhpher, and some duties related to sound. The most enjoyable so far, according to James, is art assistant. This entails preparing the various scenes for shooting. James's newest endeavor is a horror film called Zombotomy. Here is a link to the auditions website for this production. Zombotomy
If you google "James Elbon" (with quotation marks) you will find all sorts of information.
If you aspire to be the next Tom Hanks or Julia Roberts, James may have just the contact to launch your career on its way to stardom.

LHS Classmate's Lakeland Business and Art Collection Lost in Fire
A fire this afternoon, February 10, 2008, destroyed the building housing LHS classmate Hugh Turbeville's Army/Navy store. Also lost in the fire was Hugh's extensive collection of art. Those of you who attended the Friday night session of the last class reunion at Hugh's Garden Club building will remember seeing these wonderful art pieces. No lives were lost and no one was injured; however, the loss of this art collection is a genuine tragedy

LHS Class of 1959 Goes High-Tech
The LHS Class of 1959 has gone more high-tech. To facilitate communication with classmates, who do not have Internet access or use email, we have enlisted the services of www.callemall.com. This website will accept and store a calling list in several formats, one being Excel. The list must contain the 10-digit phone number in the first column and the recipient’s name in the second column. The user or customer can then call a toll-free number and record the message to be broadcast. The message can be sent immediately or scheduled for a future time and date.
We recently used www.callemall.com in an attempt to notify 66 local classmates of the upcoming class get together at Mary Futch’s home on March 8, 2008 . Fifty-nine of the calls were successful in that either someone answered the phone or an answering machine recorded the message. We identified two invalid numbers, one for Jim Arnold and one for Martha Jo Bridges Chambers. The system was unable to call Rose Varnadore Makos, for some reason. There were three no-answers (Judy Taylor McDaniel, Betty Jean Kennedy Bettag, and Lana Turner Mahoney) after four attempts (system limit), and Yvonne Johnson’s phone was busy during all four attempts.
Since the calling list is stored at www.callemall.com, future notifications to these persons will take less than one minute, and the list can be edited online, if necessary.

Announcing The Next Class Get Together
The LHS Class of 1959 will have a Pre-Spring soiree' at Mary Futch's beautiful lakeside home on Saturday, March 8, 2008. The format will be the usual covered dish and bring your own adult beverage. Plan to arrive about 5:00 PM. If you would like to come 30 to 45 minutes early and help set up the tables and apply the table cloths, that would be great.
We plan to have very preliminary discussions about a 2009 class reunion. Probably, about all we accomplish this early in the game is to establish a time line for beginning and ending the various tasks necessary for a successful reunion.

Ronald Jones, LHS Class of 1957, Obituary
Ronald A. Jones | ||
JONES, 67 Deloitte and Touche MIAMI - Ronald A. Jones, a resident of Pinecrest (Miami), FL passed away on January 8, 2008 after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 46 long, loving, magnificent years, Brenda Robison Jones, his two children, Scott Jones (Meg) and Brooke Knapp (Clark), four beautiful grandchildren, Courtney, Chelsea, Sloane and Reese, and his brother and sister, Guerry Jones and Karen Jones. Ron is a native of Lakeland, FL. He was known in high-school as "Hoops" and was the starting point guard of the state champion 1957 Lakeland Dreadnaught basketball team. Ron was a self-made success story simultaneously putting himself through college, working, and raising a young family. At the age of 62, he retired as a Partner with Deloitte and Touche where he enjoyed a 35-year long career ... a career and a firm that he loved, and that loved him back. He loved his work so much that he stayed on as a consultant for Deloitte after retirement and worked as much as he could to the very end. Ron loved to read, watch Gator football, do crossword puzzles, listen to rock music, drink good wine, and play golf with his lifelong friends (of which he had many). He was a fearsome Trivial Pursuit player who, once he got his turn, it was all but certain that no one else would get a turn, as he didn't miss. If there was one word most often used to describe Ron by anyone who knew him it was "selfless". His unconditionally loving spirit will be missed greatly, but he leaves his family strong and determined to love and support one another. Services will be held Friday, January 11, at 1:00 p.m. at Saint David's Episcopal Church, 145 East Edgewood Drive, Lakeland, Florida 33803 (Phone: 863-686-4143), followed by a "Celebration of a Life Well-Lived" at the home of his brother, Guerry. In lieu of flowers, those who wish can make a contribution to the Ronald A. Jones Children's Memorial Fund, the proceeds of which will go to St. Jude's Children's Research Fund. Following is a link to Ronnie's guestbook, hosted by The Ledger http://www.legacy.com/theledger/Guestbook.asp?Page=GuestBook&PersonID=100983509 |

Butch and Sue Moody Want You To Know About Their Grandson
Butch and Sue Moody want you to know about their grandson, Marine PFC Dustin Moody.
Dustin recently finished boot camp at Paris Island, a basic training camp for the United States Marine Corps. Marine boot camp is 13 weeks of the most grueling of physical and mental experiences that one can imagine. It is a life-changing experience. This experience accounts for the motto -- "Once a Marine, Always a Marine"
